Some facts about Loggerheads, Caretta caretta

  • Females nest an average of every 2½ years
  • Females lay an average of 3½ nest per year during nesting years
  • Loggerheads have an alternate gait.
  • Nesting time is between 1 and 2 hours and 90 to 130 ping-pong ball size eggs are laid.
  • Emergence peaks at midnight and is apparently based on surface temperature.
  • Emergence may occur 1 to 7 days after pipping. There may or may not be a depression over the nest.
  • There may be additional emergence on subsequent nights.
  • Generally as the nest temperature goes up so does the ratio of females to males.
